General Information
Be advised that our desert mesquite is generally irregular, imperfect and most logs milled with live edge intact. As a result, anticipate off-all (scrap) levels to range from nominal to considerable. Our lumber is not graded.
Similar to most wood species worldwide, various insects may inhabit the mesquite logs and lumber. The most common are referred to as powder post beetles or borers (Buprestid) and pollen feeders. Studies by local professionals in pest control and entomology suggest nominal risks exist for patterns of re-infestation or reproduction. In general, REMOVAL of bark and sapwood or heat treatment, remain most effective means of eradication.
Lumber drying methods include air-dry and kiln–dry (dehumidification). Kiln-dry preference must be specified at the time of purchase and may impact availability.
NOTE: Mesquite is noted for considerable stability due to inherent mechanical and physical characteristics. As stability is a primary consideration in drying wood, the advantage of kiln-dry, as opposed to air dry, is lessened with mesquite.
Our lumber and logs, with very few exceptions, are indigenous Velvet Mesquite (prosopsis veluntina) legally harvested within the Arizona Sonoran Desert. This particular species is generally highly figured, unique and exotic. A slow growing and hardy desert survivor, it remains in a class by itself.
Harvestation is conducted in full compliance of all local, state, and federal guidelines. This compliance ensures responsible and managed harvestation as directed and enforced by applicable federal land management organizations.
